MITY - The Jennifer Morgue

Ok. It's James Bond versus Cthulhu. If that doesn't sell you, you better pray that when Dread Lord Cthulhu returns, you are among the first to be driven mad with his divine insanity.

Yeah, Lovecraftian horror is kinda cool.

This is the second in a series, the first of which was The Atrocity Archives. They're both pretty cool books, based around technomancer Bob Howard and his work for the supernatural, computational sister to MI-6, the Laundry.

Basically, ancient evil beings, demons and magic all exist, they're all just some cosmic computer program. So Bob, in between filing paperwork and dealing with H.R., defends the free world against unknowable terrors using his Palm Pilot to enter computer programs which just happen to work the same as, say, an invisibility spell.

They're really solid books, but (and this is ME saying this!), they're also SUPER NERDY. Stross takes great strides to explain just how the hell his universe works, tying in spies, Lovecraft mythos, computers and "magic" into a fun ride that can get a little heady and dry at times.

But you can't beat stories about ancient, diabolical beings rising to the surface to drive man insane and adding a spy element to that...well, it's just icing on the top.

CTHULHU WAITS DREAMING!
